Implementing innovative solutions to design the world's first above-ground proton therapy center
The traditional solution for proton therapy, installing massive equipment in enormous underground concrete vaults that require patients to traverse a dark maze of corridors for treatment, is no longer the only option.
With site constraints and a high water table, we designed—for the first time ever—a proton center on grade that would keep patients and treatment on one level. Thanks to abundant natural daylight, the waiting areas are more patient-friendly, all thanks to a large central glass atrium and glass windows. Though we wanted the curved glass atrium to reflect the state-of-the-art technology within, we also wanted the center to mirror the long history of the University. Our elegant balancing of the modern glass with traditional brick does just that.
At 98,000 square feet, the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute was the first proton therapy center with at-grade treatment rooms. In addition, eliminating deep foundation and excavation costs saved the owner $3 million.
